We were fortunate to have family and medical support throughout our entire journey in the long 3 months that the twins spent in the NICU. People were willing to help in more ways than we could ask, but it was a simple gesture from our friend Jason that sparked the inspiration for our foundation. He knew that we were struggling financially and had to travel over 30 minutes each way (often in DFW traffic it was over an hour) to "kangaroo" hold our girls everyday. With the cost of transportation adding up, he gave us gas cards to stations that were near the hospital. It was greatly appreciated, and after Bentley and Violet came home safely, we realized that we couldn't be the only parents that could use the help to get to a hospital.
Cruise to Kangaroo was created to do just that. Whether it be gas cards for personal transportation, or public transit cards or funds for those in metro areas, the goal is simple: get the parent to the hospital to hold their baby, or in our case, babies. Like us, our cause focuses on parents that have financial needs that make such transportation costs difficult. There are parents who are excessive distances from their infant (we have met couples who traveled as much as 2.5 hours each way) because NICU support is often located in a different hospital than where the original birth location was scheduled.
Although medical laws can make it challenging to find individuals for Cruise 2 Kangaroo to help, social media and word-of-mouth are the most powerful mediums for our cause. It is our hope that C2K will continue to grow and the celebrations for getting the smallest humans on Earth out of hospitals and into their homes continues for years to come.
